Research- Audience Response

Audience Response

I decided to set up a questionnaire and asked my peers what they thought about our idea for the opening title sequence. The reason for this is because we wanted to make sure that the audience would find the extract engaging and whether they liked the overall story idea.

Below are the questions that I asked and the audiences responses:

Q1- What do you like about the Thriller Genre? Confusion, Mystery, Suspense, Compelling Characters or Hero vs Villain?
Friend 1- " I really like the way that thrillers leave me feeling confused"
Friend 2- " Compelling Characters is what I like most"

Q2- How do you think the opening of a Thriller should begin? Everyday life, Flash back, Present time, Flash forward?

Friend 1- " I think everyday life works best in an opening scene, as it makes a normal situation turn into something unexpected or sinister."
Friend 2- " I quite like a flash back in an opening sequence"

Q3- When you first heard our idea , how did you feel about it?

Friend 1- "I thought it was a good representation of the genre and think it will work well"
Friend 2- "I was excited as it sounds really interesting"

Q4- Do you like the idea of a male Antagonist?

Friend 1- "Yes, because a male villain comes across as more dominating and then this will make the opening sequence more engaging"
Friend 2- "Yes because male villains are quite popular in thriller movies"

Q5- How do you feel about the images of young girls and women and newspaper articles being stuck up on the bedroom wall?

Friend 1- "I find it quite creepy but it fits in well with the theme"
Friend 2- " It's disturbing and will make the audience feel confused , therefore it will hopefully engage them"

After receiving responses, our group feels more confident about the idea, due to them having positive opinions about the story line and the characters. Furthermore it has also helped us consider when the story is set, for example either everyday life or a flash back as these were both popular, therefore this will be taken into consideration with my group members. In addition we found that the idea of images and articles being stuck on his bedroom wall was popular and that this idea fits in well with the thriller genre. Our peers like how a thriller creates confusion and engages the audience by using compelling characters, therefore we can take these responses into consideration and try to apply these preferences and ideas into our opening sequence.  Overall my peers were excited about the idea and found it interesting, which makes our group more confident about the idea as the responses have helped us try to come up with a appropriate and engaging extract.
