Risk Assessment

As a group we have created a risk assessment which has enabled us to discover any possible risks whilst filming on Sunday. Therefore by creating this table we can ensure all members of the group, actors and equipment are safe.

Potential Hazard	Who is at risk?	Risk rating out of 10	Preventative measures
Lighting could get very hot if on for a long duration when filming.	Any of the production team, or the actor who may adjust the lighting during filming.	7/10. Quite likely that the person could get a slight burn.	Ensure that when the lights are on, no one touches them. If the lights need to be moved, ensure they are turned off, wait a few minutes until cool, and then proceed to move them.
The shower could be too hot.	Our actor, Evan, when he is in the shower during shots 2-5.	3/10. Not very likely that the shower could be extremely hot and burn him, however precautious methods should be taken.	Ensure that before Evan gets into the shower, that the water from the shower head is set to lukewarm.
When taking one of the ‘pills’ our actor could choke.	Our actor Evan, could easily choke when taking one of our ‘pills’ which will be a tic-tac or mento.	5/10. It is fairly likely that this could happen as if he is moving he could easily trip and choke.	When taking the ‘pill’ make sure that we are all watching our actor and ensure that he doesn’t move too much. This way we are likely to prevent this hazard.
Could fall down the stairs	Our actor or production team could trip down the stairs during shots 28 and 29, especially if concentrating on the camera and equipment. This could also damage the equipment.	8/10. It is highly likely that tripping on the stairs could happen.	When filming down the stairs we will ensure that one person isn’t holding anything so they can go to the aid of someone if they are struggling to move down the stairs and hold equipment at the same time.
Could trip over the wires or equipment	Any of the production team could easily trip on the wires from the lighting especially if focusing on filming a scene. This could also damage the equipment.	8/10. It is highly likely that when filming, someone could not be looking at the floor and focusing on filming the footage and then trip over a wire.	To minimise the damage on equipment and our production team and actor, we will ensure that all wires are out of the way where possible, and when walking over the wires, that full attention is payed during any dangerous areas.
Sharp edges on furniture/furniture could get in the way e.g. chairs.	All of the production team plus our actor. Furniture such as chairs could pose as a trip hazard and sharp edges could be painful to walk into or fall into.	4/10. Frankie’s house isn’t cluttered and therefore it isn’t likely for chairs to get in the way. Where we are filming there aren’t many sharp edges either.	Ensure that all chairs are tucked under tables, and if any sharp edges do pose as a threat, ensure the production team and actor know about it so that they can be cautious when filming in those areas.
Could trip over our friend’s dog, or her dog could run into our equipment.	All of the production team plus our actor. Frankie’s dog, Daisy, could easily get very excited with all the people in the house, start running under our feet which could mean we could trip over her. As well as this, she could easily pull on a wire and cause the lights to fall down, which would be a hazard to both us and Daisy.	7/10. It is likely that Daisy will get very excited and run around.	In order to minimise the chances of this happening, we should ensure that Daisy is either being supervised by our friend, or she should be put with our friends parents in another room so that she can’t accidentally knock over equipment.

• Background of character: She is a student who was brought up in a normal, loving family home. In addition, she is studying at college and gets tuition from Oliver.

The Antagonist

• Name: Oliver 
• Age: 22 Years old
• Occupation: Maths tutor
• Played by: Evan Jones 
• Background of character:When Oliver was 7 years old, he was with his friend/neighbour and one day they decided to play outside together. However Oliver decided to bury his neighbour (as part of the game) but he forgot to get her out and she hadn't been seen for 6 days. Therefore once Oliver's parents found out about the situation, they decided to adopt him to another family. This was because Oliver had a younger sister and the parents feared that Oliver could repeat his actions on his younger sibling. Once moving into his new family home, Oliver grew up viewing his step father physically and mentally abusing his step mother, therefore he was brought up thinking that this particular behaviour was acceptable and is the main reason as for why he behaves the way he does now and abuses women.

Planning Journal- Prep for Sunday 6th (filming)

In today's lesson , myself and the group members printed off and cut out all of our female victim images, newspaper articles and missing person posters. We also went to the local supermarket and bought a few of our props that will feature in our extract. In addition we started to type up our filming schedule ready for Sunday so that we will be more organised and prepared. Later on in the week, preferably tomorrow, we will create the risk assessment and practice camera shots.

Discussions about the filming location

• We have started to think about the possible filming location and who's house we are going to use whilst recording our opening sequence. We had a few issues with making the decision and struggled with finding a suitable household that includes appropriate areas to record in and a bathroom that contained a mirrored cabinet and a big enough feature wall in which we can stick the images on. 
• We originally has 3 possible houses in which we could film in, however we soon realised that none of them were appropriate or suited our needs. In addition, we thought about recording in our group member and actor, Emma's household. However due to her house being recently decorated we didn't want to damage any walls or carpets etc. with our equipment. Also we thought about Izzy's house , and she is also a member of our group. However her bedroom wasn't appropriate due to it being too small and it being located downstairs, and we preferably wanted a room which is upstairs. And my house also wasn't appropriate due to mine and my parents bedroom having bright flowery wall paper and mirrored wardrobe's , therefore this wouldn't work out as the audience would be able to see our reflection and camera equipment in the mirror and the wall paper being too feminine. 
• However one of our close friends suggested that we could use her dads house as it is the only household which is appropriate and large enough to fit in all the equipment.

We have decided to use a numerous amount of props which will be appropriate for the extract and relate to the thriller genre, add effect and reflect the antagonist's character.
The Watch
After viewing himself in the mirror, the audience view the antagonist putting on a watch. Even though this particular item can be classed as part of the costume, it is an extra item that creates effect and emphasises the antagonists mental state. In addition, the watch plays a large part within the narrative , which is time. Therefore it is considered as an important item in the extract.

The glass bathroom cabinet containing pills/needles and medication

The antagonist will look at himself in the mirror and this will show his emotion and inform the audience that he isn't happy about what he's become and knows he needs help. Inside the cabinet the audience will view a numerous amount of pills, needles and medication which emphasises and implies that he has a serious mental illness and heavily relies upon the medication.  The antagonist will take the medication and then the loud ticking from the watch will become more muffled , which implies that the medication has controlled his obsession with girls and that he has returned to his normal state.

The weird ring will again reflect the antagonists eccentric and mental state and add to the narrative enigma.

 The Red pen 
Even though the red pen will only appear for a small amount of time in the extract , it will be used to show flashbacks of the antagonist crossing out his female victims face which will imply that he has murdered them. However, the audience will not know about his obsession and so this will create tension and cause the audience to feel confused.

 The Record Player 

Fortunately one of our actors, Evan has a vintage record player and this would be very effective as it adds to his eccentric character. In addition it will appear to the audience that non diegetic classical music is playing, however the audience will view the antagonist walking over to the record player and stop the music from playing, so therefore the classical music that gets played will be diegetic music.  Therefore this particular music genre is fairly strange and again will reflect his eccentricity and create suspense.

Newspaper clippings, photos of victims and missing cases posters on the wall 

The bedroom of the antagonist will contain a numerous amount of newspaper articles, missing posters, and the most important prop which is the photographs of the girl's faces which will all have red crosses through them. However there will be one image which doesn't have a cross on it and this will be the image of his next victim, Emma. In addition the pictures on the wall will again reflect the antagonists severe obsession with girls and murdering. However at this moment the audience won't understand why he has these pictures on the walls and why he is so obsessive, therefore this will cause suspense, which is common in thriller movies.

The Antagonist

• As a group we have decided that the antagonist role will be played by Evan Jones, who is an 18 year student at my college. We thought that he will play this character well due him being a drama enthusiast who has directed, written and stared in many productions in school, college and seperate thetre groups, therefore we believe his skills will meet the high standard in which we require. In addition, due to him having experience in writing plays, we have asked him about what he thinks about our story line, and he personally agree's with the ideas and is trying to help us recieve the best grade we can.

  

 The Victim

• We have also decided that the victim role wil be played by Emma Snow, who is aged 16 and a member of our group. We believe that Emma will play this role well due to her being confident in front of the camera and she can take this role seriously. In addition, myself and the other group member, Izzy are camera shy and won't be able to remain a serious face during the filming and therefore don't want to lower our grade by acting poorly. Emma is also blonde haired and blue eyed meaning that her innocent and angelic apperance matches our description of the victims character.
  
  

  

 

Planning journal/Research - Title inspirations

Title inspirations

I have decided to get some inspiration for my title sequences due to it helping me and my group come up with the titles colour, font and size. In addition, I have viewed two student videos that contain titles in which I particularly like and are inspired by. 

• The first video that I analysed and was inspired by was 'Invite' which is an A graded opening sequence, made by another student. In this particular extract I really liked how the titles/credits appeared throughout the extract, rather than just at the end. Even though this extract contained blue titles that stood out against the black and white background, which I personally didn't think matched the actual footage,  I liked how they appeared in either the top/bottom and left/right sides of the screen, meaning that they were out of the way and didn't distract the viewer from viewing the extract . Furthermore I would like to use this particular technique and similar titles/credits during the editing stages of my final product. 

• The second video I analysed and was inspired by was 'TORN' which is another A graded opening sequence made by another student. In this particular extract I really liked how they used white , sans-serif titles. This is because I thought they looked professional and basic and I personally think the colour white matches anything, therefore the titles looked appropriate against the actual footage. Again I liked how the titles/credits appeared throughout the extract, rather than just at the end and how they appeared in either the top/bottom and left/right sides of the screen, meaning that they were out of the way and didn't distract the viewer from viewing the extract . Furthermore I would like to use this particular technique and similar titles/credits during the editing stage of my final product.

Antagonist (Main character)

• As a group decision we agreed upon the antagonist being presented as well-dressed and wearing eccentric, smart/casual clothing. However we thought that his costume should reflect his sinister personality and therefore decided he should be dark haired and be dressed in dark clothing. Preferably a black shirt with dark denim jeans. He will also be portrayed wearing neat and immaculate clothing as again this will convey his characters severe medical condition, OCD and reflect his character as fairly unusual and as a perfectionist. Furthermore we also thought that dark clothing is commonly worn by a antagonist within thriller movies and decided that it would be a good idea to include popular thriller based ideas. Another point to note is that the colour black has connotations of emptiness, therefore by the character wearing this coloured clothing  it implies that he mysterious doesn't reveal too much about his character to the audience. In addition our group has decided that the antagonist should wear a black watch, this is because , this prop will depict his mental obsession  and how the idea of time being a main point in the story.

The Victim ( minor Character)

• Again as a group decision we agreed upon the victim being presented as a generic and innocent teenage girl who's wearing casual clothing. However we thought her costume should reflect her sweet and vulnerable personality, therefore we decided she should dress in a normal jumper or T-shirt with denim jeans. Furthermore, to add to her innocent appearance, the character should be blonde haired and blue eyed, as this look is associated with being angelic and attractive and therefore presents her as having little authority.
