- Increasing tension throughout
- Something abnormal or peculiar
- Narrative often based around a crime
- Challenging obstacles that need to be taken on
- A mystery that needs to be solved
- A protagonist
- An antagonist
- Must have a narrative enigma
- Has to be engaging so that the audience don't lose interest
