Analysis of another students video- 'TORN'
I decided to analyse an opening title sequence which was graded with an A , as I believed that a higher graded video, would more likely to inspire me to use certain techniques or transitions that I believe would suit or be appropriate in my video. 'TORN' was a very good quality video that managed to successfully engage the audience and create tension at appropriate timings. The video used a variety of camera angles, that blended and transitioned the shots together well. I particularly liked the close up of the main character whilst he was examining his dolls. As this allowed the audience to view his sinister facial expression, therefore this angle could be used on the protagonist in my video as i think it would appropriate and engage the audience. I also liked the use of a establishing shot at the very beginning of the extract, as it suggested that the scene was set in a rural, normal street/home. Therefore this created suspense as people would associate their homes as a safe destination, in which you can show your true character at, however I believed that the extract created an sinister twist on this idea of a safe environment. In addition, this has inspired my to set my location within a normal household or street.
I also liked the use of costumes, for example , the main characters dressing gown and socks and slippers. This is because the extract is presenting the main character as a normal, stereo-typical male in the 21st century and makes the audience believe that there is nothing peculiar about his role, however his true self is revealed as soon as he enters his doll workhouse which is inside his shed and then causes the audience to question his character and whether he is that normal after all? Therefore my protagonist could wear modern and casual clothing , to create a sense of normality. Another point to note is that I thought the editing transitions worked very well, however i thought that the flashing images of dolls was too frequent and I think that the extract would be better if the flashes happened less. I also disliked the non-diegetic, instrumental music , that was played when the main character was in his work shed. The reason for this is because, I thought the music wasn't sinister enough and that it didn't really match the current scene. However I thought that the other non-diegetic music was successful and fits perfectly well with the thriller theme. The titles that were presented also worked well within the extract and I liked how they didn't distract the audience during the video, therefore 'TORN' has inspired my to create subtle titles that are noticeable, but don't cause the audience to get distracted.
